Millennium Promise
The mission of Millennium Promise is to support the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals in Africa by 2015 in the fight to end extreme poverty. Millennium Promise takes a unique and holistic approach to this international mission by uniting science, business, civil society, government and the media to implement high-impact programs aimed at transforming impoverished communities across the continent. The organization’s work is premised on the belief that our generation can finally end extreme poverty, hunger and preventable disease.
Millennium Promise partners with the Earth Institute at Columbia University and the United Nations Development Program to execute its flagship initiative, the Millennium Villages project (MVP). Working in many of the poorest and most remote communities across sub-Saharan African, the MVP uses a holistic and community led approach to support proven, practical interventions aimed at increasing food production, educational opportunities, disease prevention and treatment and access to safe and reliable water sources. The Millennium Villages project currently reaches more than 400,000 people in 80 villages across ten countries in sub-Saharan Africa. supporters have helped the communities more than double average food production across sites so that families have enough to eat; distribute over 330,000 bed nets so that young children and mothers are protected from malaria; and provide more than 80,000 children with locally-produced school meals to boost nutrition and school enrollment.
